Hospitals face ER overcrowding

The American Medical Association says the US is facing a potential crisis in emergency care, reports the Puget Sound Business Journal.

Ambulances are frequently diverted to hospitals that aren't as busy but that are farther away. Specialists are often unavailable when needed, and patients often wait hours or even days in the hospitals' hallways to be admitted to inpatient beds.

According to the report in the Business Journal, one of the problems is that people are increasingly seeking healthcare from hospital emergency departments, regardless of whether they have an emergency.
