National healthcare spending soars to record high

More drugs. More money.
Medicare spending grew at its fastest pace since 1981, according to a report by the government.
The government cited the advent of the Medicare prescription drug benefit as the reason for the hike in spending.
The news - reported in the New York Times - comes at a time when healthcare has soared above all issues in the race for US President. Healthcare spending has also soared - the nation in 2006 for the first time spent $2 trillion on healthcare. It averages to $7,000 per person, the Times reports.
