Investigation into WellCare limited to Florida
Patient Financial Services Weekly Advisor, January 4, 2008
The government's investigation into healthcare insurance giant WellCare Health Plans Inc. is limited to its Florida unit, an analyst told the Associated Press yesterday.
Government officials raided the Tampa-based insurer's office last October and seized documents thanks to a "whistleblower" who reported fraud.
"With each new piece of data, it seems clear that this investigation is focused on the Florida Medicaid business, the company's Florida Medicaid behavioral arrangement, and WellCare's reinsurance subsidiary," analyst Carl McDonald told the Associated Press. "WellCare's Medicare and its non-Florida Medicaid contracts received barely a mention."
Because of the raid, WellCare's stock plummeted from the $120s to a low of $20.81.
