Update on coordinator certification

The pilot phase of certification for program coordinators will be completed at the end of March 2006. From March 2005 to March 2006, the National Board for Certification of Training Administrators of Graduate Medical Education Programs (TAGME) has validated surgical and non-surgical assessment tools developed by general surgery and pediatrics, and offered certification to program coordinators of these clinical specialties. As of March 1, 2006, 34 candidates have been awarded certification and successfully completed the assessment tools; 18 are surgical coordinators and 16 are pediatric coordinators.

With the close of the pilot phase, other clinical specialties are in various stages of developing their assessment tools. Psychiatry, the newest clinical specialty to have had its assessment tools approved, is now offering certification to its coordinators. Diagnostic radiology, thoracic surgery, vascular surgery, neurology, physical medicine and rehabilitation clinical specialties have developed task forces and have been approved by TAGME to develop their assessment tools. It is anticipated that thoracic surgery and the surgical subspecialty of vascular surgery will be approved to offer certification by May 2006. TAGME provides assessment reviews twice a year (spring and fall).

The certification process has been expanding. Board members are increasingly being asked to make presentations, and a growing number of clinical specialties are contacting TAGME for more information, evidencing the growing interest in the medical education community. If you would like more information about TAGME, go towww.tagme.org, or e-mail rhn@buffalo.edu.

All the best,
