Editor’s note: The following is an edited excerpt from Residency Program Alert’s (RPA) coverage of the 2020 Residency Coordinator Salary Survey, which can be accessed in the RPA archive here.

Where people live and work may influence how much they earn. Our 2020 Residency Coordinator Salary Survey provides an opportunity to see how geographic location influences a coordinator’s earnings by comparing salaries from state to state.

As seen in our previous salary surveys, coordinators in the Southeast made less in 2020 on average, than coordinators elsewhere. The Southeast average annual salary was nearly $50,000, which was an improvement from the 2019 survey when it was about $49,000. The next lowest average was in the Central region with $52,500.

The range for average salary by region spanned nearly $15,000. The Pacific region paid the highest average annual salary at nearly $65,000. It was followed by the Northeast at just over $59,000. This marks a significant drop for the Northeast from the 2019 survey when the average salary was almost $63,000. Average and median salaries by region are displayed in Figure 4. Table A provides state-specific data for those with large enough sample sizes.
