A desired geographic location is the most important factor when applying for residency programs, according to a survey conducted by the National Residency Matching Program of active U.S. allopathic medical school seniors.
Eighty-eight percent of survey respondents cited geographic location as an important factor when applying to programs, followed by a perceived goodness of fit (84%), program’s reputation (83%), academic medical center program (68%), and quality of the residents in the program (67%).
When it comes time to rank programs, the importance of the factors changes. Overall goodness of fit becomes the top factor (89%), followed by the interview day experience (82%), desired geographic location (77%), quality of residents in the program (75%), and reputation of the program (71%).
