Several studies have shown that residents are not getting enough quality sleep during training. Although it’s a time-honored tradition in residency, a lack of sleep over a long period of time may lead to symptoms of burnout, anxiety, and depression.
The following are the symptoms of sleep deprivation:
- Difficulty processing information and making decisions
- Experiencing severe mood changes
- Feeling fatigued
- Gaining weight
Strategies to combat sleep deprivation and improve sleep habits include taking naps and breaks when possible during long shifts; eating healthy meals and snacks to keep energy levels up; and asking for help from other residents, faculty members, or the program director.
