The majority of respondents to Merritt Hawkins’ 2019 Survey of Final-Year Medical Residents would like to be hospital employees when they enter the job market. Of the nearly 400 residents surveyed, 45% responded that they are most open to hospital employment than any other practice setting.
According to the report, second most popular practice setting among survey respondents was employment with a single specialty or multi-specialty group (34%). Seven percent of respondents preferred partnering with another physician and 2% preferred opening a solo practice.
The report also notes that although it’s unclear how familiar residents are with federally qualified health centers (FQHC) since they don’t encounter that model during training, 5% of respondents said they would prefer practicing in a FQHC setting.
