Think about the last time you took vacation. How many tasks, emails, and evaluations languished in limbo during your break? Chances are it was a lot—and you were probably gone for a week or two, at most.
Imagine what would happen if you were out for a month or more due to a medical, maternity/paternity, or family leave of absence. In these cases, someone would absolutely have to cover for you; otherwise, the program would suffer. The problem for most coordinators is that their institution or department does not have a coverage plan for such situations.
