The ACGME Board of Directors approved a major revision to Common Program Requirements Sections I-V at its June meeting. The approval was announced in a letter from ACGME President and CEO Thomas J. Nasca, MD, last week.

Among the significant changes found in the revision is a requirement setting support for residency coordinators to be at least 50% FTE (at least 20 hours per week) for administrative time, although review committees may further specify the appropriate support level.

The revised Common Program Requirements will be effective on July 1, 2019, and most will be subject to citation on that date. However, the ACGME stated that it will not issue citations for a number of requirements before July 1, 2020, to give sponsoring Institutions and programs sufficient time to comply. The ACGME has released an implementation guide outlining when each requirement is subject to citation.
