Residents in Quebec are experiencing rapid rates of burnout, with an average work week of 71 hours and a requirement to be on call at least two weekends a month, according to survey of more than 2,000 residents conducted by the Fédération des médecins résidents du Québec. Meanwhile, the Quebec’s Ministry of Health is adamant about increasing residents’ total weekly hours, citing that their collective agreement has expired. Negotiations are currently stalled.
While the federation opposes an increase in the number of resident hours, it believes that any reduction would prove detrimental to patient well-being. However, residents are demanding greater flexibility and protected time to study for all their exams.
In another survey of 947 residents, 55% reported signs of burnout, while 64.5% said that they felt exhausted at the end of their workday at least once a week. It should be noted that the survey focused primarily on professional life and did not factor in non-work-related exhaustion factors.
