Members of the University of Buffalo Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences internal medicine residency program were recently awarded one of 30 Back to Bedside grants from the ACGME.

The residents are using the grant to find ways to balance the increasing time spent entering data into electronic health records with the decreasing time spent on direct patient care.

“The move to electronic medical records makes patient care safer, but it also makes it harder for physicians and residents to spend more time away from the computer screen,” says Regina Makdissi, MD, assistant professor of medicine and associate director of the internal medicine residency program.

The grant will fund two initiatives. The first is “Close the Loop rounds,” in which residents and faculty meet at the patient’s bedside to educate patients and their families about their disease and answer any questions they have.

“The idea is that establishing a meaningful relationship with the patient is critical for medical residents to develop as physicians and to counter professional dissatisfaction issues, such as burnout and depression,” says AnneMarie Laurri, MD, a third-year resident who led the project.

The second method is “the Attending of the Day,” which emphasizes the primary role that residents play in patient care and autonomous care decisions, with the faculty member present only in a supervisory role.
