Emotional exhaustion, poor attitude, and career dissatisfaction are a few signs of physician burnout. Burnout can be harmful in patient care as well as in professional and personal well-being. Early retirement, medical malpractice suits, depression, suicide, alcohol use, and relationship issues are potential outcomes for individuals that undergo burnout. Trainees in neurology are at an even greater risk of these outcomes, considering the specialty has one of the highest rates of physician burnout and one of the lowest rates of work-life balance.
