The ACGME Common Program Requirements Phase 2 Task Force recently released proposed major revisions to Sections I-V of the Common Program Requirements for review and comments. Most notably, the Task Force determined that fellowship programs should have their own separate set of requirements due to the inherent differences in specialty and subspecialty training. The two sets of proposed revisions can be found on the ACGME website.

Revisions to the Common Program Requirements for residency programs include a focus on recruitment and retention of a diverse workforce, resident well-being, program director duties, and increased resident education on compassionate communication with patients.

The review and comment period for the proposed revisions ends March 22. If approved by the ACGME Board of Directors, the targeted implementation date for the new requirements is July 1, 2019.
