AMA House of Delegates (HOD) recently adopted a new policy supporting expansion of the Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) program eligibility. Individuals currently enrolled in the PSLF program will have their loan balances forgiven after making 120 monthly payments while working full-time at qualifying public service organizations, such as nonprofit institutions. The new AMA policy calls for residents at for-profit institutions to be eligible for the loan forgiveness as well.
The HOD also adopted a policy calling for the ACGME to require programs to inform applicants of their PSLF qualifying statuses. According to the AMA Council on Medical Education’s report, medical students may not be aware of entities’ statuses—either for-profit or nonprofit—when ranking residency programs for the Match.
