To better understand what patients and first responders experience before arriving to the emergency department, residents from Doctors Hospital in Columbus, Ohio, recently spent a day participating in cold-water rescue drills with local firefighters and emergency medical services (EMS) crews.

For the simulation, two residents portrayed victims floating in a pond. Their colleagues would swim out to them with rope and others would pull them back to shore. Then another group of residents would load the patients into an EMS truck while others treated them.

The goal of the exercise was to provide residents with a team-building exercise and to foster better relationships with fire and EMS crews.
