A new cross-sectional study involving more than 21,000 internal medicine residents found that Milestone-based assessments were in line with the results of the former nondevelopmental rating system. The findings provide some preliminary support that Milestones-based ratings are a valid assessment.

For the study, researchers compared residents’ Milestones ratings during the 2013-2014 academic year to the pre-2015 resident annual evaluation summary. Both rating systems correlated with American Board of Internal Medicine certification examination scores in terms of residents’ medical knowledge, although Milestones ratings may be a better detector of professionalism problems, according to the study.
