Medical and dental residents and fellows at the University of Washington (UW) recently signed their first union contract. Terms of the three-year contract include 3% wage increases in 2016, 2017, and 2018; allocation of $50,000 annually to support childcare services for residents who qualify; up to 12 weeks of paid leave, a $750 annual travel allowance, and allocation of $50,000 each year for a bike program. About 1,350 residents and fellows are covered under the new contract.

The contract is the result of two years of planning and negotiation initiated by UW Medical Center residents who wanted to negotiate for more competitive salaries. In October 2014, residents and fellows joined the UW Housestaff Association.
