This academic year saw the number of ACGME-accredited programs rise 3% to 9,977, according to the newly released 2015-2016 Data Resource Book. A total of 394 programs were newly accredited, which is the largest annual increase of accredited programs, following a decade of steady growth. Those programs account for more than 124,000 active residents and 149 specialties and subspecialties. Internal medicine saw the largest growth with 26 newly accredited programs, followed by interventional radiology-integrated (24), and family medicine (21).

The growth of programs can partially be attributed to the transition to a single accreditation system with this year being the first in which the ACGME began recognizing osteopathic training programs. Thirty-six programs achieved Osteopathic Recognition.
