Average resident salary rises

According to Medscape’s latest resident salary report, the average resident salary was $56,500, up slightly from $55,400 last year. Residents in critical care are the top earners with an average salary of about $62,000, followed closely by those in cardiology, gastroenterology, and pulmonary medicine with $61,000.
Residents in the northeast continue to be the highest paid with an average salary of $63,000. However, Medscape noted that this changes after residency with practicing physicians in the northeast actually ranking last in compensation, according to its 2016 Physician Compensation Report.
