Resident wellness is becoming a popular topic of discussion in medical journals, blogs, and forums, as widespread press coverage has drawn attention to the high rate of suicide among practicing physicians. In an effort to address physician wellness issues from their outset, the ACGME recently launched a well-being initiative (see the sidebar on p. 6) and also included expectations in its Clinical Learning Environment Review Pathways to Excellence tool that institutions provide education and monitoring on resident burnout.
