Physicians entering practice after residency will have to decide whether or not to pursue board certification through one of the 24 American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) member boards or 18 specialty certifying boards affiliated with the American Osteopathic Association (AOA). While board certification is not required by state licensing boards to maintain medical licensure, an increasing number of hospital medical staffs and insurance networks are requiring physicians to maintain board certification.
