With residency coinciding with the traditional childbearing years, many are calling on programs to address concerns regarding maternity or paternity leave policies. A survey of radiation oncology residents found that about 45% said they or their partner had a pregnancy during residency. A separate survey of general surgery program directors found that more than 40% of respondents reported having at least one resident take a year off for maternity or paternity leave.

Despite the significant number of residents taking leave, policies vary across the country. Of the radiation oncology residents surveyed, about one-half thought a standardized leave policy should be in place. Of the program directors surveyed, about one-half reported have a paternity leave policy and two-thirds had a maternity leave policy.
