A physician has been charged with stealing more than $175,000 worth of equipment from two hospitals. According to prosecutors, Vinay Rawlani, MD, stole equipment from NorthShore Medical Group hospitals in Evanston and Skokie, Illinois, where he worked part-time.

Rawlani is also chief resident of the plastic surgery program at the McGaw Medical Center of Northwestern University and is two months away from completing his residency. He has been placed on administrative leave pending an internal review.

Authorities say the equipment Rawlani stole included an automated external defibrillator, an ultrasound machine, two ultrasound probes, a video printer, a suction machine, and a bladder scanner. He has returned some of the stolen equipment.
