Nearly one-third of medical students surveyed for a study recently published in Academic Medicine met the criteria for alcohol abuse/dependence. That is twice the amount seen in a sample of similarly aged peers not in medical school.

The researchers also found that medical students reporting signs of alcohol abuse tended to show symptoms of burnout, depression, and low mental or emotional quality of life. Medical students who were unmarried, younger in age, and had higher educational debt were also more likely to show characteristics of alcohol abuse/dependence.
