In 2012, when internal medicine interns first arrived at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) in Boston to begin their residency, they were paired with members of the department of medicine's teaching faculty. These faculty members were tasked with assisting the interns throughout their residency as part of a new professional development coaching program.
