To help residents navigate the challenges of post-residency employment, the internal medicine faculty at the Dell Medical School at University of Texas at Austin have created a course to teach them the business side of medicine.
In a perspective article recently published in the Journal of Graduate Medical Education, the faculty at Dell wrote, “Overwhelmingly, residents have found learning the business side of medical practice to be very helpful. Most had never heard of these concepts prior to this educational conference, and many were surprised to hear about the issues they may face after residency.”
The course includes traditional lectures, small group discussions, and question-and-answer sessions. Topics covered in the course include:
• Preparing your CV
• Job opportunities
• Interviews
• Negotiation basics
• Basics of compensation and benefits
• Malpractice insurance basics
