According to a study published in Academic Medicine that surveyed more than 1,300 students from 20 schools, medical students hoping to secure a residency position in surgery applied to an average of 58.2 programs, the most of any specialty. This was followed by radiology (41.8), emergency medicine (41.3), OB-GYN (36.4), and internal medicine (34.6). Students interested in psychiatry applied to the fewest programs (21.7). The study also found that medical students went on an average of 6 residency interviews.
