A study looking into clinical outcomes of patients treated by overnight medical residents at Penn State Hershey Medical Center found no significant change after bringing in an on-site attending-level physician supervisor.

Researchers evaluated patient outcomes before and after an overnight academic hospitalist program was implemented in September 2012. The researchers focused their study on in-hospital mortality rates, 20-day readmission rates, lengths of stay, and transfers to the intensive care unit.
