The University of South Florida (USF) moved one step closer towards building a new 12-story medical school in downtown Tampa after the eight trustees who oversee its medical and education programs voted unanimously in favor of the project.

Based on the health committee’s recommendation, all 13 trustees will vote on the proposal to construct the Morsani College of Medicine at its meeting on December 4.

The medical school is estimated to cost $150 to $163 million and would be built on an acre of land donated by Tampa Bay Lightning owner Jeff Vinik. USF estimates it can raise $130 million in donations and state funding.
