The American Medical Association recently asked seasoned residents to share with new residents and medical students their tips for transitioning to residency. The residents made the following suggestions:
·         Take your education into your own hands: Take every opportunity to learn by reading about cases, and ask for feedback often and not just at the end of a rotation.
·         Actively make social connections: As important as it is to bond with your fellow residents, who you’ll be depending on for the next few years, also make friends with people who aren’t physicians for a better work-life balance.
·         Seek out mentorship and be a team player: A mentor will help you feel less alone and overworked. Residency is not a competition so help out your fellow residents and accept their help back when needed.
