Earlier this week, the Institute of Medicine (IOM) released its recommendations on graduate medical education funding, proposing a restructuring of Medicare-funded training. Fairly quickly, several organizations such as the American Hospital Association and American Medical Association criticized the report for failing to recognize a need for additional residency slots.

In my relatively short time covering the residency market, all I’ve ever heard is that the shortage is real and more residency slots are needed. Could a redistribution of physicians really be the solution? What do you think of the IOM recommendations? Let me know.
