The American Osteopathic Association’s (AOA) House of Delegates voted in favor of a plan for a single accreditation system for graduate medical education programs.

The plan, approved at the AOA’s annual meeting this past weekend, calls for the ACGME to oversee all AOA and American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine (AACOM) residency programs by July 2020. The AOA will cease to accredit osteopathic residency programs at that time.

Under the single accreditation system, the AOA and AACOM will become ACGME member organizations and there will be osteopathic physician representation on the ACGME’s board.
