From meeting with applicants for pre-interview-day dinners to helping to host tours, residents in the Department of Surgery at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio play an important role during recruitment season, says Eileen M. Kleffner, academic coordinator. That's no small task, since the department holds seven interview days and meets with more than 150 applicants.
To thank trainees for participating in recruitment season, Kleffner's department gives residents a point for participation in various activities, such as planning for interview day, taking interviewees out to dinner, assisting with presentations for applicants, and participating in interviews. At the end of the season, participants' names are entered into a drawing for coffee gift bags; movie theater and restaurant gift cards; department hats and shirts; and wine and beer.
"Resident participation is crucial to a successful interview day and this is our way of acknowledging their efforts," Kleffner says.
