GME funding is on the agenda for the American Medical Association’s House of Delegates meeting, which begins June 7 in Chicago.

The AMA’s Council on Medical Education plans to present a report about the physician workforce shortage and GME financing, including a synopsis of 17 states’ efforts to increase their physician workforces, or influence specialty choice or practice location.

In a recent Forbes article, Bruce Japsen wrote that “Congressional gridlock” has kept efforts to increase GME funding on the backburner in recent years. According to Japsen, that may be about to change.

“The AMA expects a full-throated debate at its meeting Saturday through June 11,” he writes. “If the AMA develops a resolution or policy stance, it becomes part of its lobbying agenda in Washington.”
