As tempting as it may be to contact your favorite applicants after an interview, post-interview contact can be inappropriate and awkward, one program director says.

The program director, blogging anonymously at Kaplan’s Residency Secrets blog, writes about calling candidates after interviews. Post-interview phone calls can be awkward for candidates and some medical specialties have rules prohibiting post-interview contact, the program director blogger writes.

A well-placed phone call from a resident may have more influence on a potential candidate, the program director writes. And as for candidates who want to follow up after an interview, “what should never go out of style is a genuine thank you note from the candidate expressing appreciation for all that was done to provide information and to make the candidate feel at home.”
