Competency-based education is common in medical education, but the language used to categorize competencies for healthcare professionals is not.

Medical education experts from the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) compared more than 150 published lists of competencies for healthcare professionals publishing a list of common competencies in Academic Medicine. The authors say the aim of their list is not to replace any regulatory structures or training requirements, but to be used as a “common taxonomy” of professional competencies across medicine.

The authors added two new competencies to their list—interprofessional collaboration and personal and professional development—in addition to the six ACGME Core Competencies. The full list of competencies includes:
•    Patient care
•    Knowledge for practice
•    Practice-based learning and improvement
•    Interpersonal and communication skills
•    Professionalism
•    Systems-based practice
•    Interprofessional collaboration
•    Personal and professional development
