GME leaders expect to reach a decision about a single accreditation system for GME later this month.

The American Osteopathic Association (AOA) Board of Directors and the American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine (AACOM) Board of Directors will review a memorandum outlining a proposal for a single accreditation system during their annual meetings this month.

The ACGME Board of Directors provided the boards with a Memorandum of Understanding after concluding negotiations with the osteopathic community in June, ACGME CEO Thomas J. Nasca, MD, MACP, wrote in a recent letter to the GME community.

Nasca wrote that he couldn’t provide details about the memorandum due to confidentiality agreements with the AOA and AACOM, but that he expects to provide more details about the outcomes and next steps for a single accreditation system in late July.

The ACGME, AOA, and AACOM announced they would pursue a single accreditation system for GME in October 2012. At the time, the organizations said the change was intended to give all trainees the same path to prepare for practice and ensure consistent standards. Under the plan announced in October, the ACGME would eventually accredit approximately 1,000 osteopathic programs currently accredited by the AOA.
