When Elise Sullivan, MD, had her son Mason during her second year of residency at the Santa Rosa (Calif.) Family Medicine Residency program, faculty and other residents were supportive. Her classmates prepared for her absence during weekly meetings facilitated by a faculty psychologist. When she returned to training eight weeks after giving birth, there was a room where she could pump breast milk. Mason was even welcomed at Thursday afternoon lectures, which Sullivan brought him to while he was small.
