Before the 1960s, resident assessment often consisted of one physician's opinion about whether a resident was ready to practice. Later, efforts to quantify performance and make assessment more fair led programs to develop a myriad of complicated formulas and assessment tools. The next phase of resident assessment may combine simpler, qualitative evaluation methods with larger, more diverse groups of reviewers.
