In 2001, when Joy Brown started her job as a program coordinator in the Department of Surgery at the University of Alabama in Birmingham, she only had about two weeks to work with the previous program manager, who was retiring. Like many new coordinators, Brown didn't have any experience working in medical education but says she had a "knack for organizing, for knowing where things were."
