Early assessments of residents' clinical skills may be one of the most important tools residency programs have in curbing performance problems and helping residents get the most out of their education. But conducting early assessments can be time-consuming and expensive for residency programs, and it's not clear whether the early assessment methods many residency programs use achieve the desired outcome of preventing serious resident performance problems.
