It is common practice to have chief residents sit on house staff committees and interdepartmental groups. Simply placing them on these committees is one thing; it is another to have them participate.


Enhance chief resident engagement in these committees by including chief resident-specific topics on each agenda, even if they are only brief talking points, says I. Michael Leitman, MD, FACS, chief of GME and DIO at Beth Israel Medical Center in New York. If chief residents feel that they are getting something out of the meeting, they’re more likely to be active participants.
