Kevin Weiss, MD, MPH, ACGME senior vice president of institutional accreditation, in a letter sent out April 20, invited all DIOs to participate in the Clinical Learning Environment Review (CLER) program that will determine the future of institutional site visits. CLER is a part of the ACGME’s Next Accreditation System (NAS) set to begin for seven specialties this summer.

CLER includes components such as:

·         Site visits about every 18 months

·         Short notice (three weeks or so) for the visits to promote continual accreditation standards

·         Initial  visits used for data gathering only

Weiss says the ACGME seeks DIOs as nominees to establish membership of a CLER evaluation committee or as members of CLER field staff. To read more about CLER or the nomination process, visit the ACGME’s NAS site by clicking here.
