Joseph Kubacki, MD, was recently sentenced to 87 months in prison on 150 counts that include healthcare and wire fraud, as well as making false statements, according to the CBS affiliate in Philadelphia, WTRF.com. He is also ordered to pay $1 million in restitution.
Kubacki served as chair of the Temple University School of Medicine’s ophthalmology department. According to prosecutors, he submitted thousands of false claims and overbilled for more than $4.5 million in services rendered that were actually done by Temple University residents. Temple officials fired him in 2007 after confronting him about the fraud scheme.
According to an AIS Health article, Kubacki attended annual billing compliance training sessions 2003-2007. He was convicted on the 150 counts by a jury last August.
