Most residents, program directors, coordinators and faculty know what constitutes unprofessional behavior. They know it when they see it.

Although some areas of unprofessional behavior are clear, spelling out some examples of unprofessional behavior in the resident manual can help further define and expand its meaning in more specific terms.

In addition to the common drug-related and abrasive attitude concerns, consider listing:

·         Dishonesty

·         Sexual misconduct

·         Lack of commitment to self-learning

·         Prejudice

·         Arrogance

·         Lack of accountability

This week’s tip is from The Residency Program Director’s Handbook by Robert Higgins, MD.
