News and briefs: AAMC critical of proposed FY13 budget

AAMC President and CEO Darrell Kirch spoke out against President Barack Obama’s FY2013 budget proposal last week in a press release on AAMC.org.

In the statement, Kirch expressed “deep concern” for the proposal, which calls for a multi-million dollar reduction in Medicare. Kirch says the reductions will cut funding for graduate medical education, leading to an estimated 10,000 fewer trained physicians every year during a period when physician shortages are already a major concern.

The press release addresses cuts to pediatric training programs such as Children’s Hospital Graduate Medical Education and medical training programs such as the Health Careers Opportunity Program.  Kirch states that “the administration is jeopardizing the long-term health of the nation in favor of short-term deficit reduction proposals.”
