More than 70% of neurosurgery residents responding to a survey about resident work hour restrictions are opposed to new standards that require an 80-hour work week limit imposed by the ACGME this year. The survey, published in the December issue of Neurosurgery, asked the residents questions about the new restriction. More than one-third of respondents said they violate the 80-hour limit occasionally or frequently. Six percent said they have made a medical error resulting in patient harm after an extended shift. More than half of respondents answered that limiting residents’ work hours would not prevent medical errors or reduce patient fatigue. To read more results from the survey, click here.
