There are a number of different ways to communicate with site directors at other hospitals or clinics. Here are a few ways to maintain contact with off-site individuals:

  • Program directors from the sponsoring institution can participate in or sit on an affiliate’s education committee
  • Retreats are especially effective, and they can be even more valuable for those site directors located far from the sponsoring institution
  • Off-site directors can participate in one of the sponsoring institution’s semiannual evaluations of the programs and residents
  • E-mail
  • Journal clubs

Whatever mechanisms you use, document them in the GMEC minutes at least annually. Ask program directors to send a short report or e-mail to the DIO explaining how they communicate with off-site directors. Keep a printout of these accounts in a notebook for reference during an institutional site visit.

This week’s tip is from The Graduate Medical Education Committee Handbook by Vicki Hamm.
