Program directors and coordinators are increasingly becoming aware of how residents’ social network persona can affect their professional persona. There are horror stories of residents posting HIPAA-protected patient information online, rude comments about nurses or other staff, or pictures of a wild weekend in Vegas that a patient stumbles upon.

The British Medical Association recently released social networking guidelines for physicians, according to The Wall Street Journal. The guidelines warn physicians against accepting friend requests from current or former patients among other things.

The article also includes a link to a video created by the Mayo Clinic that can be used to speak with residents about social networking.
